 Livestock Market
« Thread Started on Mar 10, 2007, 1:56pm »

From the early hours of the morning farmers bring their produce to the market to trade with each other and the sellers as Alassea. the market is a busy, if smelly place and is also a good place to haggle for a horse at a good price.

All the folk of Morholt come to the market as it is the main source of their income...unfortunatley Baron Claudius is also present.

Zethra wandered through the market in the small, rural town. She gazed up at the sun setting over the gently sloping hills in the distance. It was a beautiful sight to behold, but Zethra's eyes didn't take it in. Instead they stared blankly into the distance. It had been a while since her strange encounter with the girl in the road. She had thought about it for a while afterwards and had kept to herself, avoiding going to any classes. She would start going to them again, she thought, but right now there was a different sort of task at hand.

Zethra turned her unseeing eyes back towards the smelly livestock market full of filthy looking peasants. She scowled slightly as her eyes took in the sight. The villagers seemed to be keeping their distance from her, and she didn't really blame them. She wondered how many people from "outside" came here to this despicable civilization. Even if other people were common here, they probably didn't come accross many who had such an obvious hate for everything and everyone there. The cloaked and hooded figure that was Zethra must have been quite an imposing site. Crowds seemed to avoid where she was walking and formed a clear space around her. Most people kept their eyes down and ignored her or some would glance then quickly look away when pierced with Zethra's glare.

Zethra made her way through the crowd, cloak flaring from the wind she herself made from taking quick strides. She came finally to a place where many reasonable looking horses were tethered. She inspected them all slowly, one by one. A grey mare caught her eye. The horse had blue eyes, which was what first caught Zethra's attention. It was so different from the other horses that she wondered how she would be able to buy any other one. The other horses that were tethered there were all brown and black. They shined like copper and were all short. The grey horse seemed quite a few hands higher. It seemed slightly more shoddy. It certainly did not look neglected, but maybe somewhat forgotten in the other horses' beauty. Maybe the reason that Zethra felt such an attraction to it was because they both seemed to need someone that cared about them. Of course, she did not think anything of the sort , but just had an unexplainable feeling towards the mare. She approached the man in charge of the stall.

"How much for the grey mare?" She said, more of a demand than a question.

He gave her an inquiring look, but then shrugged. "Fifteen gold for that one."

Zethra paid the man the money asked for, and then took hold of the grey mare's reins, leading it away. There was something chilling in the blue eyes of the mare, but it only intrigued Zethra more. She decided she would name it Dapple. The name seemed farmiliar, like it was buried somewhere in her mind. She must have heard it before, surely.

Eli skipped along the path in a state of pure happiness, the orange glow from the sun warming her back. It had been a long day, spent mostly up in her room studying for one of Canas' difficult examinations and so she had decided to go for a walk in the evening sun.

She had strayed quite far from Garnet tower, Having hitched a ride in the fruit and vegetable cart which delivered to the castle, and the surroundings here seemed very different to what she was used to. Still, even the smelly villagers couldnt stop her good mood, and so she continued down the path.

It wasn't long before she met a traveller, with the most unusual grey horse Elirae has ever seen. The girl wore her hood up over her dark her, which made her pale, deathly face stand out quite oddly.
"Hello" Eli muttered, something about the pair catching her attention, "Is this your own horse?"

As Zethra was still leading the horse further away from the smelliest part of the village, determined, she heard a quiet voice behind her. She didn't spin around like she usually would, convinced that it could only possibly be a village and thinking that one of them wouldn't dare counter her. She turned around slowly, thinking of simply brushing the villager aside carelessly or setting them back into their place. But she turned around not to see a poor woman with a greedy expression on her face, but a girl maybe her own age, looking quite cheerful. The stranger was dressed far from the garb of the village. Zethra's eyes narrowed suspiciously.

"Yes. I just bought her," Zethra spoke coldly.

Zethra looked the girl up and down again. Her eyes moved over the pointed tip of one of her ears uncovered by hair. She passed over the ears carelessly. One race to another made no difference to her. Zethra's eyes locked onto the other's for a split second before moving again.

"Why do you ask?"

"Oh no reason!" Eli smiled warmly, determined to ignore the cold tones that Zethra seemed to be using. "I'm Elirae, a student of Garnet Tower." She offered a hand to the girl, but doubted she would offer her own.

"It's a lovely evening, isn't it?" she added, not caring whether the stranger was replying, it was nice to have some company after the day she had spent in her room, with only a book for companionship.

The horse seemed un-nerved by Eliraes presence, and she sensed that the girl had only just bought it. "Have you had the horse long? Whats his name?" She babbled, gently patting it between the ears.

Zethra's mind raced. Garnet tower? What was that? But she had heard it before, she was sure. A dim recollection came up in Zethra's mind about something with books. A scholor? That had to be it. She stared at Elirae's hand blankly, and edged away slightly. Why would she want to touch this girl's hand? She thought maybe she would get a hint and leave her alone, but the girl just dropped her arm, not seeming to notice, and babbled on.

Zethra felt very uncomfortable with this girl talking to her. She really didn't have any social skills, and wasn't too used to talking to just talking to someone. She decided she would just let the girl talk on and on and maybe she wouldn't notice that Zethra wasn't answering, or she would just stop. Much to Zethra's discontent, a break in the questions came and the girl looked at Zethra expectantly.

"N-no. I only just got her today. Her name is... Dapple," Zethra stammered.

How was it that she could lose the confidence that she always had in such a simple situation? Wasn't this the sort of thing that normal people did every day? Ever since Zethra had came into this land to take a break or start new, she had just been cornered into awkward situation after awkward situation. She looked around uneasily, looking for some reason to escape. Her eyes scanned the crowd one last time hopefully, before turning her attention back to Elirae.

Elirae finally noticed the look of discomfort in Zethra's eyes, and began to realise how long she had been forcing the poor girl to listen to her constant incoherant mutterings.
"Oh, im so sorry" She sighed, "I get so carried away sometimes, sorry if i made you feel uneasy."
She smiled her warmest smile again, before she darted off back to the tower.

"If you're ever bored or need someone to talk to, just visit Garnet Tower, it's in Alassea!" she grinned from further down the path, "Just ask for Elirae!" With that she turned her back and set off the way she had come.

It was nice to have met a girl, similar to her own age for once. Canas was lovely, but she often wished she could have some company her own age, and when she did come across other teenagers, nearly all of them were male. So a girl made a nice change. She hoped Zethra would come by sometime, she was nervous, that much was certain, but she also seemed nice. After all she could have just told Elirae to leave....

Zethra blinked as the girl just walked away. What a strange experience it had been. Elirae had disappeared as suddenly and surprisingly as she had come. Zethra sighed and looked up into the grey mare's blue eye. "I guess we should best be going back home, too," she muttered to herself as much as the horse. Home. Using that word seemed beyond surreal. Had she ever even really used it in her life? A smile broke out onto Zethra's face as she lead the horse away. She wouldn't have been able to explain why or how it came, as it definitely was not like her, but it was there.

And who knows, maybe she would even visit that girl sometime. It had been uncomfortable, but it could not hurt to gather allies, and Elirae definitely seemed like an interesting person. And if Zethra couldn't comprehend this girl and her actions, what if she came across an enemy like her and didn't know how to act? Yes, it would be to Zethra's advantage to get to know this girl perhaps.

As Zethra led the horse down the same path that Elirae had come down from before, she had an idea. She mounted the grey mare uneasily; she hadn't gotten any gear for it and had to ride bareback. But with some coaxing the mare went forward at a steady pace and soon Zethra came upon Elirae in the path.

She dismounted the horse smoothly and faced the girl. "It seems I neglected to tell you who I am. I am Zethra Ellanry, and you may find me in Tirenna, if you would so wish it."

Zethra mounted the horse again and rode further down the path.
