 Winter Storms
« Thread Started on Dec 22, 2007, 4:57pm »

Winter wind whipped around the trees, its stinging force slapping Trianna’s exposed face and cutting through her woolen coat. Shivering, she stuffed her stiff, numb fingers under her armpits, trying to warm them up as she tramped through the half foot of snow that had piled up on the road after last night’s snowstorm. Her father had wanted her to bunk down at the outlaw camp until the weather turned warmer- perhaps as long as three months, when the snows would melt and winter would end. Horrified at the thought of having to spend the entire winter among people whose faces looked as if they had never smiled, Trianna had instead decided that she would leave for the gypsy camp as soon as the weather gave the slightest break.

At first it had been fun walking through the snow back to the gypsy camp- Trianna had practiced her aim by throwing snowballs against different trees, and even stopped at one point to build a snowman- but eventually the bone chilling cold had set into her bones, only to become worse as clouds had unexpectedly started to build above the bare treetops, blocking the weak noon sun. Now Trianna was trying to hurry as best she could along the path towards the Court of Miracles before the oncoming storm could blow up around her. Even while she kept walking, however, a few snowflakes fluttered through the air, flurrying in circles as the rapidly rising wind caught them.

Trianna stopped for a moment, looking at the trees around her and trying to gauge her chances. She was only about a third of the way from the Retreat to the Court of Miracles; even on days that had the best weather, she had trouble squeezing the trip between her parents to one day, and with the path obstructed as it was, it was going to be even longer- there was no physical way she would be able to get there before nightfall, much less in time for the storm to miss her. Stopping though, would present even greater problems; every available surface was iced over, so there would be no way she could build a fire, or even find a dry place to sit, and hypothermia would set in even sooner if she stayed immobile. Sighing, Trianna gritted her teeth and kept going while the snow became thicker around her, starting to obscure her vision, and growing worse all the time. Trianna knew enough about the weather to know that unless she could stumble across some sort of shelter soon, she was going to be caught in the middle of a blizzard with no help for survival.

Farusan hurried along the woodland path, sick of the sight of snow. BAck in the town he had not noticed it so much, for the winters sun had melted it away, but here under the shade of the trees, the sun had not been able to do its job and heavy drifts still leaned against tree trunks, obstructing the path in many places.

FArusan's longing for KArsal increased now. He was still a fair way from the camp and as it got later the cold set in deeper. He began to wish that he had stayed in town, but knew that he had been away from his men for too long, and they needed to know what was going on and even whether he was still alive. Since he had freed the dragon hatchling that the elven boy RAven had so stupidly stolen, he had not been back to camp once, and the other dragon egg played heavily on his mind. He wondered if it had hatched yet, or whether it had been recovered by the guards. He hoped not, for it was key in his plans.

The first few flakes of snow started to fall and Farusan looked up to see the skies darkeneing with the threat of storms. He sighed deeply, hoping desperately that he would reach the retreat before the heavens opened properly, although the chances were slim. Due to the ice, branches were frozen solid and it was impossible to make a torch. Even if he did manage to find a thawed branch it was sodden and far too wet to light. The darkness made his journey longer and far more tiresome and he began to feel weary too.

A dark blur soon broke his monotonous thoughts, and squinting in the darkness he made out the shape of a girl. "Who goes there?" He called, but the wind whipped his voice away like he had whispered. He followed the shape with his eyes, stumbling over branches and snow as he followed her through patches of thick trees, almost lsing her several times. He was worried for her safety, as she looked barely of age and he knew that she was a long way from anywhere safe.
Finally he managed to catch up with her, and instantly he recognised her. Trianna. He hadn't set eyes on the child since the day she stole him the dragon egg, and they hadnt exactly parted on good terms. He remembered the fool the boy had made of him and how he had felt when he realised that he should never have trusted him. He still felt apologetic towards Trianna though, for he had dragged her in unneccessarily and he knew he had probably treated her wrongly. Still none of that mattered now, for the snow was falling heavier and the main objective was to get out of the woods alive.

”Who goes there?”

Trianna looked up, hope blossoming in her at the sound of another human voice, but she could not see anyone in the snow and thick forest around her. Just the wind she thought grimly My mind’s playing tricks on me. Shivering she picked up her pace as best she could, looking carefully at where her feet trod to ensure that she was still on the path. Hypothermia was already setting in if she was hallucinating, and she needed to fight it off as best she could.

Suddenly a figure loomed through the trees, startling Trianna into stopping. For a moment, her mind tried to judge whether it was another hallucination- although she had never heard of actually seeing things that weren’t there in a blizzard, she supposed it could happen- but then the figure came closer, and Trianna saw that it was hardly the welcoming face of her mother or one of her friends that her mind would conjure up, but… Farusan Sawyer. Although it was hard to tell as he was still several feet away and the snow was beginning to become heavy enough to obscure objects not immediately in front of her, his face seemed to be slightly… embarrassed, as if he was remembering something he did not like. Trianna didn’t have to think hard to guess what; she hadn’t been in the best of moods either when he had left both her and the elven boy alone to fend for themselves. She still didn’t know what had happened to Raven- they had parted at a crossroads only a few miles out from Lithonion- but Sawyer’s lack of understanding for a young boy who had provided invaluable help despite his mistakes had been enough to make her feelings towards the outlaw leader rather cold.

Speaking of cold though…

Trianna’s teeth started chattering again as her surprise began to wear off, bringing her back to her senses. Whatever she thought about Farusan, she couldn't pass up a chance of help in this weather. Dragging her feet through the snow towards him, she stuttered “S-S-Sawyer? What are y-you d-d-d-doing h-here?” That’s not really important right now the practical part of her mind pointed out We need to figure out a way to get shelter

"I'm travelling back from town" he muttered weakly, still embarrassed after the way he had treated the girl but trying not to show it. "How long have you been out in this weather?" He asked, eyeing the thin coat she was wearing uneasily. She would start to freeze and hypothermia would set in if they didnt find warmth and shelter soon.
As the light faded so did Farusans sense of direction. Several times he could have sworn that he had already passed that tree or this stone, but he told himself firmly that stones and trees were not recognisable and that it was merely the cold getting to his brain.
After some time, a faint glow could be seen through the trees, lighting their way a little and definitely giving them some hope.
"What do you think that is?" Farusan whispered to Trianna. "It looks like some sort of house...but i didnt realise we had passed by a town or village?" He was puzzled, for as far as he knew they had been making their way towards the gypsy camp and yet there was no town anywhere near there. He figured they must have taken a wrong turning...unless this was just a lone house in the forest?

How long have you been out in this weather?

Not wanting her teeth to keep chattering, Trianna clenched them together and answered “Since dawn.” The sound was slightly muffled, but it still sounded better than as if her jaw was about to shake itself from her face. Sawyer was looking at her in a slightly concerned way, and she didn’t want to add to his worry by making him think she was about to pass out.

She wasn’t sure whether she fooled him or not, but either way he began walking again, and Trianna followed quickly. The snow had by now covered just about everywhere, from the path to the tops of the trees, and Trianna’s sense of direction was soon obliterated as she trudged behind Sawyer, hoping that the outlaw knew these woods better than she did. Weariness soon set in, and she stopped looking at the confusing sameness of their surroundings, instead concentrating on setting one foot in front of the other.

Trianna thought that about two hours had passed- although the light was so blocked that there was no real way for her to tell- when she realized that Farusan had stopped. “What do you think it is?” He asked, his low voice hard for Trianna to hear. Unsure of what he meant, she raised her gaze from her boots, and looked forward, trying to see what he meant. "It looks like some sort of house...but I didn’t realize we had passed by a town or village?” Peering forward, Trianna managed to make out the flickering light he must have meant. “I dunno” she replied, noting with surprise that she had stopped shivering. “I didn’t think there were any villages within walking distance from the Retreat, unless you count to Court of Miracles and this certainly isn’t it.” Come to think of it, she wasn’t feeling nearly as cold either, even though the snow was still falling everywhere; she could easily fall asleep on the ice surrounding them. Warning bells went off in her mind at the thought; she had to shake off this mood or she was going to fall down and never get up. Come on! She ordered herself Get walking! Forcing her numb legs forward, she called back “I really don’t care who it is though, if they have light they have warmth, and we both need that.”
